Cara’s Story: Effort + Consistency = Growth

Vocational Habilitation Participant Cara V. has experienced a tendency to have a difficult time managing emotional situations. When these situations would arise, she at times would experience a sort of tunnel vision, becoming very focused on the situation, and unable to move beyond it in a productive way.

However, through her participation in the Works4Me Program and in Goodwill’s Vocational Habilitation Program, she has demonstrated tremendous progress as she learns and practices self-regulation skills. These skills are helping her manage her reactions to situations outside of her control, and in turn, building her confidence. These skills will no doubt assist Cara as she continues in her process of seeking and obtaining community employment.

“Growth happens when effort meets consistency,” Vocational Habilitation Manager Chrissy Kaman said. “Cara is proving this more and more as her hard work is turning into real growth.”

Kaman added that the Vocational Habilitation team is seeing Cara use the skills she has learned to help her through challenging situations and has witnessed a decrease in outbursts. This commitment and progress that Cara has shown also contributed to her being named Sandusky Vocational Habilitation Employee of the Year at Goodwill for 2025.

“I’m so proud of myself that I’m doing better handling tough situations,” Cara said.

We’re proud of Cara too and look forward to seeing all she accomplishes in the Works4Me Program and beyond!
